About Us
The Uganda National Bureau of Standards (UNBS) is a statutory body under the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Co-operatives established by the UNBS Act Cap 327 and became operational in 1989. It is governed by the National Standards Council and headed by the Executive Director who is responsible for the day-to-day operation of UNBS.
The Mandate of UNBS is:
Formulation and promotion of the use of standards;
Enforcing standards in protection of public health and safety and the environment against dangerous and sub-standard products;
Ensuring fairness in trade and precision in industry through reliable measurement systems; and
Strengthening the economy of Uganda by assuring the quality of locally manufactured products to enhance the competitiveness of exports in regional and international markets.
Job Requirements:
• The ideal candidate must possess a Master’s Degree in either Computer Science, Information Technology or Computer Engineering from a recognized University / Institution
• Possession of Honours degree in either Computer Science, Information Technology or Computer Engineering from a recognized University/ Institution
• Additional possession of a professional qualification in either CCNA, Microsoft MCSE 2000, MCP, MCSA, MCDBA, CWNA, CCIP and other relevant qualifications.
• At least eight years’ working experience, three (3) years of which are at a management level in a reputable organization
• Member of a recognized professional body is an added advantage
• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
• High degree of personal integrity, innovative, creative and self-driven
• Possess the ability to conduct an IT planning, policy and feasibility study
• Skills in system installation and management; Network design, management and security; Network monitoring; support and service delivery ; and
• Expert skills in Documentation and information management.
• Age should be between 30 and 45 years.
Job Duties:
• Responsible for the development and implementation of the UNBS ICT policy and strategy
• Take lead in the design, development and maintenance of the corporate website, UNBS presence on social media and also support IT users by providing a help desk.
• Periodically maintain server functions for email, internet, databases, file storage and administration
• Actively facilitate the provision of hardware and software in line with Directorate policies and procedures
• Offer technical guidance to all Bureau staff on computer related matters either directly, by way of advice or by liaising with organizations outside the Bureau, in solving the problems that arise from time to time
• Install and maintain the LAN, WAN and telephone networks
• Periodically maintain security of UNBS critical data e.g. Uganda Standards and provide ICT training to staff
• Plan, budget, and procure ICT related equipment and supervise their maintenance
• Monitor closely, application of computer policies and procedures in force with the purpose of proposing amendments to fit changing circumstances or otherwise improve computer usage at the Bureau
• Represent UNBS at different ICT related fora
• Perform any other relevant duties that may be assigned from time to time by the Deputy Executive Director- Management Services.
